Obituary for Dave Sargent, Arcadia Class of '62
Dave Sargent, aka David Stansfeld Sargent, M.D., died peacefully at home on July 8, 2006, following a long illness. Dr. Sargent was born in New York City to Stan and Virginia Sargent but spent most of his childhood in Phoenix, Arizona.
After graduating cum laude from Arizona State University he entered medical school at the University of Colorado. After graduation he completed a pediatric internship at the University of Chicago before going on to a residency in Psychiatry at Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Harvard Medical School. Following residency Dr. Sargent attended Brandeis University where he received a Masters degree in Community and Multi-Cultural Psychiatry. In addition to his Board Certification in Psychiatry he was also Board Certified in Geriatric Psychiatry.
He moved to Seattle in 1989 working as a staff Psychiatric at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound and in the past several years he was in private practice. Dr. Sargent was on the clinical faculty of the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and an officer of the Washington State Psychiatric Association. Throughout all this time he maintained his lifelong commitment to public sector psychiatry and the treatment, at his own personal sacrifice, of his elderly patients who adored him.
Dr. Sargent was also a much loved musician and folk dancer. He played mandolin, guitar and bass fiddle with his many friends in bluegrass and folk circles. He was an extraordinarily gentle and kind man who loved and was loved by his wife, Lenore, his children, Michael, Alison and Kayla, and his family pets. He derived his greatest pleasure and peace from his family and time spent at home with them. He enjoyed attending his children's soccer games, school activities, musical and theatrical performances, family travels and events, reflecting on them through photographs and slides. He will be greatly missed by the many friends, family members, colleagues and patients whose lives he touched.
In addition to his wife and children, his brother, Steve (Scottsdale High Class of 1959), his brother-in-law, Elihu Rubin, and two nieces, Miriam Judith Sargent and Eliana Lucia Griego Sargent, survive him. A Memorial period will be observed at his home Sunday through Thursday between the hours of three to five and seven to nine.
